Background
Deccan Plateau Wines is the result of a young man’s dream of making wines that are away from the mainstream. For Nitin Shinde (Director and Oenologist), who hails from a family of farmers, the idea of owning a winery goes back to his college days. He studied botany for his graduation, where he developed a specific interest in viticulture. After finishing his B.Sc. (Botany) from Fergusson College, affiliated to Pune University, Nitin went on to study winemaking in Australia.
Completing an in-depth study in Viticulture and Oenology from Adelaide University, Australia, Nitin gained hands-on experience in the McLaren Vale Terrior, which is unarguably the foremost winemaking region in the New World.
Sakonnet Vineyards, USA, was the next destination where Nitin worked as QA Manager. Returning home, he took up the post of Assistant Winemaker at Sula Winery in Nashik. This offered him the opportunity to apply his know how gained through a global exposure. Incidentally, Nitin is India’s first professionally qualified winemaker.
As a man who follows his instincts, Nitin eventually established his own winery on the outskirts of Pune. Using high quality grapes that are meticulously cultivated in 20 acres of fertile farmland, Nitin’s team made their first wines in 2008.
Nitin is delighted to have equally enthusiastic team members to support him in his venture. Together, they are working diligently towards making Deccan Plateau Wines a cornerstone of the Indian and global wine market, portraying every bit of their undying passion.
